This is getting weird.
I’ve already e-mailed Kinja Support, but is anyone else experiencing this too? Random comments of mine are disappearing from the main articles. No combination of “show more comments”, “load more comments”, “show pending”, “view all replies”, or “show more replies” will reveal them.
Clearing cache and cookies doesn’t help. Nor does enabling or disabling the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! browser extension. I’ve even tried using different browsers on different devices, and I’ve still got multiple comments hidden from view.
The only way that I can access these comments is through a permalink. In most cases, I can get to them through my profile page. I don’t think I’ve ever had a comment dismissed or flagged because well frankly I don’t post crap that would earn such a reaction. Besides, you’re supposed to get a warning notification when that happens, right? I’ve never seen it.
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! was a reply to someone who commented on my post. Try finding it !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I don’t know why it’s not appearing, but I can tell you for sure that I did NOT flag or dismiss my own comment, not even accidentally.
Now usually, you can find all of your comments through your profile’s “discussions” page. But I’ve found that (at least) one of my comments can’t even be accessed from my profile at all. If you follow !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , it should be queued up to comments of mine from last month. Look at the first permalink (dated !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ). It displays the comment preview, but clicking on it won’t take you to the comment itself. It just loads the main article.
I distinctly remember that before that comment became inaccessible, it had garnered a few replies, but I can’t find any remnants of that conversation anymore. My permalink is broken and I don’t have the permalinks to those replies. Even the comment preview on that discussions page doesn’t show the “speech bubble” icon underneath the star, indicating that it had replies.
Actually, wait, let me try something...
Okay, well Kinja won’t let me give you a link to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but if I look back far enough into my notification log, I can find a couple of those replies. But only in preview form. I can’t read the full comments, nor can I tell if they received replies of their own. Clicking on them does nothing but load the main article, keeping those comments hidden just like mine.
What the heck is going on? My comments in !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! are invisible from the main article too.
Have you felt that any of your recent comments have been ignored? Check back on them. Maybe it’s just that nobody ever saw them. Maybe they’re just Kinja’d...?
EDIT: I’ve been able to get some comments to display by leaving pending replies turned off. Which is weird, because showing pending comments used to be the only way to show ALL comments.

I don’t know, since I don’t comment of FP anymore. But my guess is maybe there’s a max amount of comments an article can hold? Because there’s a stupid amount of comments on FP now.

Kinja’d. I can’t find permalinked comments in Jalopnik articles either.

Edit (well won’t let me): That’s stupid, because now that I think of it. Jalopnik gets way less comments than pretty much any other Kinja blog. So if there’s a limit I doubt Jalopnik hits it.

A couple hundred comments is nothing. I’ve seen Kinja handle more than a thousand.

Dismissed comments still have permalinks. The only comments you will not be able to find in your own commenting history are ones from deleted threads or were deleted because they were flagged.
That said, it looks like you’re just getting hardcore Kinja’d. :/

Kinja has been doing some weird stuff with comments. I had a similar thing happen with a comment on a post I made on LaLD a couple weeks (?) ago.

I can’t comment on FP anymore, it comes up gray and the people I respond to don’t even get notifications that I responded to them, tested with E90M3 a while back. Fuck it, I just spend all my time on Oppo.

Permalinks in general tend to work just fine for me. I’ve only noticed a few random ones that won’t work. But who knows- I guess I’d have to check comments one-at-a-time to find out just how bad it is.

This is why I don’t comment anymore. They still haven’t figured out how to stabilize the comments and, let’s admit it, that’s the main reason for most of us “veterans” to still be here.
I have trouble logging in sometime. Comments go away. Get multi-posted etc.

Since we’re talking Kinja, can anyone explain the significance of the Staff/Community categorization of comments on Oppo? It would seem obvious, but appears to categorize people all willy nilly.

You are “staff”, but only on your own posts. As the author of this post, I am “staff” on this post. Oppo admin and Oppo moderators are “staff” on all Oppo posts. Any comments recommended or responded to by staff are included among staff comments. At least, I think that’s how it works.

I’ve hated on Tesla once at the beginning when I got commenting privileges, and hat was it. They didn’t gray me then, and that was over a year ago.

No, you do not get any notification when a comment has been dismissed.
I’ve noticed that the “show more replies” disappears when I click “show pending”. I used to read the grey replies, but now I can’t.
This comment was a reply to someone who commented on my post. Try finding it without the permalink .
I see the same comments on both links, I’m not sure which one is not showing up for you.

If you look at the thread where I’ve posted a close-up of the studs (1:12pm), the main article is loading only one reply (1:15). But I have more comments in that thread, dated 1:42 and 2:19 . I can’t see them without a permalink. But you can?
Are you sure that dismissals don’t trigger a notification? How else is the user supposed to know when they’ve crossed a line? I deserve to know what I did wrong.
BigBlock440

Yep, I see both of those. I have to click “show all replies”, but can’t click “show pending”. If I click “show pending”, I can’t expand any of the comment threads.
Good point. These hexes look to be about 7 or 8mm. Not sure how much torque those keys can take, but this car calls for about 80 lb-ft at the lug bolts.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Huh, so I guess they don’t need to be torqued down quite so much after all. The set used in this article calls for 30-35 lb-ft, and the listing for this set says 15Nm. I guess that threadlocker is even more critical than I thought.
As for the dismissal thing, I’m 99.99% sure I’ve had comments dismissed, mostly on the other sites because lots of people are thin skinned and don’t like opposing viewpoints or being told they’re wrong. It would be an odd coincidence that only those comments disappeared, and sometimes after they’ve got replies and stars. Not once have I received a notification that a comment’s been dismissed. A thing that does happen when a comment is dismissed is that any replies to it or downstream of it also disappear. Don’t know if it’s any part of your problem though.

Ok, there must be some kind of compatibility mix-up between the comment display buttons. I can see those comments without using permalinks if I load the comments exactly as you said.
See, when I’m not using the Kinjamprove extension, I never even bother using the “show all ## replies” button, because I want to load EVERYTHING, even the pending comments. But this throws a wrench into that whole technique. Apparently some comments are only visible through the pending button, while others are only visible by keeping pending comments hidden.
I’ll forward this to the Kinja team. Hopefully it points them in the right direction and they can get this all straightened out.

On second thought, maybe it’s not that simple. I still can’t get my comment on the Subaru article to load, not even through a “show all ## replies” button. Avoiding pending comments doesn’t help either. I wonder if that trick only works when the page loads staff comments first? The Subaru article doesn’t have any staff comments, so it automatically goes straight to “community”.

testing 123 (I made multiple accounts to test why all of my comments are “pending approval”). I will delete this comment after I figure it out
EDIT: This comment is now in the state as described in the original article. It shows as “pending approval” if I visit it from my permalink. If I try to find it in the comments section, it’s simply non-existent.
Does anyone know the cause of this and how to avoid it?????
